A lifetime sample of poems with settings and themes from the stern Fifties, the rebellious Sixties and Seventies, into the Millennium, growing up Wild West style in New Mexico.

Making Little Edens Merimée Moffitt 9781492881582 Books

As an admittedly biased reviewer (I'm the author's daughter, and could_not_be_prouder of my Momma), this book has so far enthralled me. I could not stop reading (or crying) as I tore through the poems that lent such eloquence and emotion to my mother's life stories. These poems are for poets and non-poets alike - anyone keen on exploring the human condition of love, family, loss, addiction, war, relationships, nature, politics, loneliness and connection should buy this book. She touches upon the deepest struggles we all face - but with such simple and relatable beauty, the whole book makes me feel more connected to her than ever.

Momma, I am so proud. I love you.

When reading poetry I like to skip about at random. The first poem I came to in "Finding Little Edens" was Dearest Jack Kerouac. I had read On the Road before a summer job as a Forest Service lookout, and was completely taken -- to that place of yearning Merimëe Moffitt so masterfully took me back to. Her poetry is as good as anything I've ever read. It is so intensely evocative it hurts! After first reading a first few poems, I had to put the book down. Merimee Moffitt is a really seriously, damned good poet. Each of her poems is a bright jewel straight forward, honest, unabashed and solid. The northern New Mexico poems perfectly convey the time and place photo-journalist Irwin Klein captured in "New Settlers 1967-71" [...] I feel good when I read these poems, so I savor a few each day, and know I will read them - again and again.
Over the years I have heard Ms. Moffitt read at numerous New Mexico poetry events and I was always drawn to her clear and strong poetic voice. When she asked me to review her book, Making Little Edens, I was flattered and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the manuscript.
There is an immediacy and lyric quality to her realist narratives. Each poem is a vignette infused with truths that squeeze my heart, and remind me why I am engaged in the work of poetry.

Merimee addresses the female growth of an adulthood colored by choice; choosing biological and hand picked sisters, choosing a way of life and of parenting, especially in contrast to the difficulties marked by a childhood in the era of laissez-faire (often emotionally punishing) parenting styles of the fifties and sixties.

She is a master of slant rhyme, which becomes a force moving each line along to the next, creating a fluency that is not urgent but awakening. The writing feels organic, unlabored. Throughout the book, Merimee offers herself up as a sacrifice as in, Summer of ‘57, Eureka, California, as did so many women of our generation. Merimee braves this and other cultural dangers head on, where many hide from the same demons. The strength in her reckoning may give others the courage to consider using her tactics as well as hope that the divisive bits in our lives can be made into little Edens. We watch her form her own unique parenting techniques, not in opposition to her childhood, but as an embrace of all the positives that family can be, as a tool for love.

These are also stories of place, most notably California and New Mexico. In one New Mexico poem, Ode to the Chevy on a Stick, Moffitt writes, ...the best stuff grows form the cracks, a fitting epitaph for life in one of the most impoverished states of the union.

I smiled through most of this volume, even while reading the hard to face poems like, Bossy Bitches, Beautiful Babes, and I felt the author smiling along with me. This book is an intimate walk through the social upheaval of growing up female in the sixties, parenting, maturing into power, standing firm against the tide in middle-age, doing the same thing in a new context, in a nation that leans towards disrespect of mothers, teachers, healers, mother earth, ad infinitum. The body becomes a symbol through out, especially in the poems called He Mistook His Penis for Power Tool..., and in The World in a Rant Poem which may be the author’s Ars Poetica. In these two poems the Everyman of society is at last the Everywoman.
If you are looking for a poetry book to lull you to sleep, to fill your head with pretty pictures and soothing rhymes, then look elsewhere. Making Little Edens is NOT the book for you. In this collection of poems, Merimée Moffitt picks you up, gives you a good shake, and takes you along for a ride that spans generations in a lifetime. Unconventional, insightful, and, I suspect, a whole lot of fun to be around, Moffitt is also a very gifted poet.

The poems in Making Little Edens were written from 1980 through 2013, but give us a view into Moffitt's life, beginning in the forties and fifties and bringing us up to the present. She writes both in free verse and in more structured forms, defining, reflecting, and bringing her subject matter to life, whether it is a snow dance in Taos, the birth of a baby, or the death of a friend.

In Granai, Afghanistan May 2009, she uses free verse

smooth curves like satin to fall on
a third cherub with curls
in her arms in soft cotton dress
leather-soled shoes tied nicely
like her brother's her sister's
shoes now minced for landfill
by our unbelievable overkill
can one finger press a button
to bomb the mother's babies
in one second
in one second faster
than birth or conception
they are gone

"phone call against bombing babies" is more structured, yet equally powerful

bodies picnics pets husbands toys
collateral damage yet we stand tall
how much to pay for kids so small?
who will be spared the girls? the boys?

Moffitt's writing is powerful, and she doesn't shy away from her truth, telling the story of a generation while at the same time sharing her own wild ride through decades of change, growth, and living, raw and real.

This poetry was a real trip for me to read, evoking an era I remember so well. Merimee's poems carry me out of my comfort zone. Like swift arrows her words strike deep and hard, a bull's eye on every page. I'm at once startled and soothed by her honesty. This illuminating collection of poems is a rich and rewarding journey I'm glad I took. Like so much good literature I'm changed by it--for the better.
