This book contains a very interesting cast of characters, each with their own story to tell. The author does an excellent job pulling the reader in and bringing to life this fantasy world. The threads of magic were immediately sewn into me when I opened The Barren Twelve and threaded themselves even deeper as I journeyed into the mythical world VanHooser brings forth through a chain of events that will leave you begging for more- On that note, the only thought I had following the finish of this novel was, where is the 2nd?!!
This is an original plot, uniquely told; with characters strewn together by a story that wraps, charms, enchants, and illuminates the imagination. VanHooser creates a vivid world of fantasy under the laughing moon, in a tale I will never forget. The careful development of each character really enhances the connection made with the reader; making the contrasts, thrills, chills, and tragedies that much more powerful.
I can honestly say I felt as though the novel was "alive" at points and as each chapter passed, it felt like I was holding a spell book and magic was flowing through me. Spectacular.
This is a must read for any fantasy lover, leisure reader, or fantasy beginner!
At one point in everyone's life our imaginations will become reigned, made barren that it is. Whether the reigner was a lost love, a detrimental failure, or just the everyday trials of life, we lose that little piece of us that craves the impossible. In The Barren Twelve, a Spire is spoken of, and this has the capacity to restore that which is lost. While reading this book, I slowly began to feel my imagination reignite with the wonder and innocence it was once had. To be able to read a book and have that sense of wonder rekindled through Todd VanHooser's writing is a true gift. The writing is sensible, you won't get lost in futile Shakespearean wanna-be writing like that of many fantasy writers. Additionally, each character deals with the temptations, trials, and triumphs like anyone else here on Earth, the only difference is that they are elves, orlocks, drawves, seekers, and magicians. Nevertheless, the battle between good and evil blurs the lines of black and white, making the story fast-paced with a genuine brush of humanity. You will be missing the chance of a lifetime to enter the Spire of Imagination and Adventure if you do not read this book. Don't cheat yourself.
Loved this book and can't wait to see what happens next. This definitely classic dungeons and dragons style fantasy, but with some interesting twists. The world is deep & well thought out and I enjoyed getting to know the characters.
If you are a fan of fantasy, read this book.

The Barron Twelve is one of the top books in the fantasy genre. The adventure created in this new series is filled with action, emotion, and intrigue that are passed onto the reader as the reader follows the characters on their adventure. Vanhooser develops the characters in a way that the reader makes a personal connection and becomes part of the adventure. Vanhooser's creation of the action sequences provides the reader with a front row view. The story line keeps the reader guessing on what path the characters will take. The Barron Twelve is a well written novel with solid character development, intense action, and a story line that keeps the story moving.
This is a most read for all fantasy/action readers
This book is a fun ride that leaves you guessing until the end, which will leave you gasping for breath. Great strong characters- both heroes and villains are multifaceted. Kiernan and Loreena are both great heroines. BTW, I am totally in love with Keth.
The Barrent 12 is both captivating and intriguing. A definte favorite so far in this series! The plot unfolds in a manner that grabs your attention and keeps you involved. It brings the world of magic and fantasy into a synthesis of excitement and adventure that provides the reader with a wealth of enjoyment.
I must say that this book is very creative and different from all other mystery books!!!!
I love how each character has a unique place in the story and it all comes together to make this fairy tale world seem so real. You just want to become part of this book in every way!!!!
